Woods to miss PGA Grand Slam of Golf

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Tiger Woods will not play in next month's PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.

Woods announced his intention to miss the tournament Wednesdaynight on his official web site. The 31-year-old said he alsowill miss his annual autumn trip to Asia in order to spend moretime with his family and fulfill personal obligations.

The world's top-ranked player, Woods qualified for the event bywinning the PGA Championship last month in Tulsa.

"Qualifying for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf is very meaningful tome because it signifies that you have won a majorchampionship," Woods said. "As much as I would enjoy going toBermuda, I have played a lot of golf late in the year and needto shut it down for a while.

"Hopefully I'll qualify again and I look forward to competing inthe future."

Woods has won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf seven times in eightappearances - including last year in Kauai, Hawaii - and hasearned a total of $3 million in the event.

"While we are disappointed the world's No. 1 player will not beable to join us this year in Bermuda, we certainly understandand respect his decision to be with his family," PGA presidentBrian Whitcomb said.

Woods will be replaced in the field by Jim Furyk, the winner ofthe 2003 U.S. Open.

Also competing in the 25th edition of the event will be Masterschampion Zach Johnson, U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera ofArgentina and British Open champion Padraig Harrington ofIreland.
