LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) -- Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman issued an on-air apology Thursday at the start of the Buick Invitational in regards to a comment made about Tiger Woods.

Tilghman drew a two-week network-imposed suspension for saying Woods' peers should "lynch him in a back alley" to conclude the January 4 broadcast of at the Mercedes-Benz Championship

Tilghman returned to the air Thursday for the first time since her suspension.

"In a recent live broadcast, I used an inappropriate word that was offensive to many," she said. "Over the last two weeks I've taken the time to reflect and truly understand the impact of what I've said. While I did not intend to offend anyone, I understand why those words were hurtful. I am terribly sorry for any hurt that I have caused. I would like express my deepest apologies."

Tilghman already had apologized to Woods, whose management team constructed a statement saying the issue was over.

The first woman to be a lead anchor on golf telecasts, Tilghman missed the Golf Channel's coverage of the Sony Open and Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Woods is making his season debut at Buick, a tournament which he has won three straight years.
