MEXICO CITY, May 2 (Reuters) - Mexico’s world number one women’s golfer Lorena Ochoa ended her playing career with a sixth place finish in the Tres Marias Championship in her home country on Sunday.
The 28-year-old, who has dominated women’s golf for the last three years, announced her retirement last month saying she had lost her motivation and wanted to spend time with her family.
“It’s been an unforgettable week, to say goodbye in my home is lovely and I want to thank everyone for their support,” said Ochoa, who carded 12 under par 280 for the tournament in Morelia, seven shots behind winner Ai Miyazato of Japan.
“I enjoyed this tournament very much and I played with all my heart,” she told reporters.
“I have lots of projects to fulfill and I hope I’ll always be remembered. I the future… I’d like to see more Mexican women players in the LPGA.”
Ochoa retires as number one having taken over from Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam in April 2007. She won 27 LPGA titles including two majors
