ANAHEIM, Calif. - MATRIX Shafts has a reputation for being a technical leader in graphite shaft development with the willingness to blaze new trails where other companies haven't gone before. While blazing these trails, MATRIX has enjoyed much success on the PGA Tour with their vaunted OZIK shafts, and is poised to make another bold move on tour this month with the release of their new OZIK PROGRAM line of graphite iron shafts.
Conventional wisdom has been that serious players will not opt for graphite in their irons. However, MATRIX believes that this is type of thinking is outdated, and with their tour proven and patented Hexadecagonal (HD) 16-sided internal structure, the release of their new OZIK PROGRAM line of graphite shafts is the most technically advanced iron shaft they have ever created.
The OZIK PROGRAM consists of two weight categories and a wedge-specific shaft as well. In pioneering this shaft, MATRIX set out to reproduce the "control" tour players had with their ability to spin the ball prior to the USGA rule change concerning grooves. Through the design process, MATRIX engineers were able to create the spin control of last year's groove rule, but were also able to successfully design the OZIK PROGRAM with more stability through impact than current steel shafts have to offer. Also identified in the design process, the derivation from the median launch angle and spin rate is smaller. Meaning, the output of the shot will be more "in-line" with what the player is putting in. The design interventions implemented in the OZIK PROGRAM are made possible through advanced composites and advanced technologies.
"The OZIK PROGRAM 95, 130 and GSW mark a new beginning for tour caliber graphite iron shafts," said MATRIX Shafts Chief of Research and Design, Daniel You. "We have an advantage in terms of the breadth of design capabilities over other materials. The palette of possibilities for designers using advanced composites is enormous and growing every day. Coupled with the computing power of the current age and the ability to certify our designs on tour and with newer technologies like Trackman, we can now produce shafts that provide greater performance than ever before. We are of the belief that graphite shafted irons will become the norm in the future."
While MATRIX concedes that there may be challenges involved to win over converts, at least in the beginning, but they have full confidence that early adopters will see realistic and true benefits that the OZIK PROGRAM's in-depth ingenuity and advanced pioneering has been crafted with. MATRIX also noted that they have had players who had previously played graphite iron shafts in competition test the prototypes, and the positive results produced were proving ground that old thinking may be "getting old."
"Old thinking is getting old out here, players gravitate to what works," said MATRIX Shafts Director of Tour Operations Joe Miera when asked about any reluctance tour players have historically had in playing graphite shafts in their irons. "If you were to look at the hybrid count on tour 10 years ago versus now, you'd see a major shift towards them. Most of these guys out here, especially the younger guys, show up with fewer and fewer pre-conceived notions - they just want a better mouse trap."
"We had at least two players, both Major winners, tell us how incredibly stable they were," said Miera. "It's exciting for me since I have a chance to be a part of a game changer, and that's exactly what these are."
