ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—J.B. Holmes opened his round with a 40-foot birdie putt from the top tier and kept right on going. He finished with a 6-under 66 for a one-shot lead among early starters Thursday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Holmes’ tee shot landed in a divot on the 10th hole and he hit on the wrong tier of the green. The birdie putt was an example of his newfound confidence with the putter, and his length never hurts. He also made an eagle on the par-5 12th.

Mike Weir of Canada made an eagle from a fairway bunker on No. 12 in an up-and-down round of 67, joining Henrik Stenson of Sweden. The group at 68 included former Bay Hill champion Ernie Els.

Steve Stricker and Phil Mickelson were among the later starters on a warm afternoon.
