RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico (Ticker) - All eyes will be on Tiger Woods and his return to competitive golf this week, but there will be more happening on the PGA Tour than just the return of the game’s most dominant player.
The $3.6 million Mayakoba Golf Classic begins Thursday with Brian Gay returning to defend the title.
Gay won his first PGA Tour title at the event last year, posting a two-stroke victory over Steve Marino.
Gay led the field with 23 birdies and carded four rounds in the 60s. His third-round 62 sent him on his way to a breakthrough victory.
So far this season, Gay has been steady with a tie for fifth at the Sony Open and a tie for sixth at the FBR Open.
Marino is back in the field and has already posted two top-10 finishes in his first two starts here. Other notables in the field include David Toms, Chad Campbell, Charles Howell III, Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank.
First prize is $648,000.
