We hear it all the time. I hate slow greens or these greens are too fast for the undulations on this course. We inevitably need to blame our putting on something. But each week we watch touring pros putt great on different greens, different speeds and different grasses. So here are some tips to help your putting.

It is my belief that we are creatures of habit and our mind and body are set in putting; to stroke a putt and look up consistently in the same time frame. So with that being said when we have slower greens our putting strokes take longer and therefore we tend to come out of the stroke earlier and hit more putts off center. The results of an off center hit on slow greens is a putt that stops quickly and usually short of our target! Then the next putt we over correct, get wristy and power the ball by the hole! So the next time you are putting on slow greens, try to stay over the ball longer and hit your putts solid. You will see better results!

Now fast greens are a whole different matter! Fast greens will expose a poor putting stroke. You must have a smooth stroke that repeats itself to be consistent! Some students take the putter back too short and then adjust on the forward stroke, these are suicide for fast greens. So the next time you are playing fast greens try a putting stroke that is longer and slower to gain consistency. All of us could use a lot more experience on the greens so get out and practice! Before you criticize slow or fast greens be careful you may find yourself working at a course with the greens that you don’t like, so instead of complaining about them, learn to putt all greens then you solve your problem!
