NEWPORT, Wales (AP)—England’s Luke Donald bounced back from a poor opening round at the Wales Open to equal the Celtic Manor course record Friday.

Donald shot a 4-over 75 on the first day and was 111th and in danger of missing the cut. But he responded with nine second-round birdies Friday and shot a 6-under 65 despite carrying a seven on his card.

“In the first round I had a sore throat, was not switched on mentally and putted poorly,” said Donald, who reached 2 under to move into the top 30 on the leaderboard. “I can’t remember the last time I had 32-33 putts in a round.

“But I woke up feeling a lot better healthwise and used the calm good weather to my advantage and sank a lot of putts.”

Donald’s confidence in his short game returned after he sank a 40-foot effort on the fourth green. He followed that up with a 30-footer at the eighth and went on to sink three more from more than 20 feet.

The multiple birdies allowed to Donald, the winner of last week’s Madrid Masters, to offset the damage done to his card when his approach shot to the 18th green spun back into water and cost him a double bogey.

Chicago-based Donald returned to Europe for three tournaments in a bid to secure his Ryder Cup spot. In addition to winning in Madrid, he finished second in the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

“I was determined not finish the trip over here by missing the cut and now if I shoot low again over the weekend I could be in contention.”

Donald completed his round before the overnight leader Chris Wood, who had equaled the course record 24 hours earlier, started his second round. Wood’s lead remained intact throughout the morning.

Denmark’s Sorren Hansen reached 4 under after shooting a 70 and for a time Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who had started on the 11th tee, got to 6 under during a round of 68 but slipped back after running up a double bogey six at the 5th hole.
