BEIJING - The 2010 China Open golf championship will be played in Suzhou in April with an increased prize fund of $2.5 million, organisers said on Tuesday.

The 16th version of the tournament will be the richest event on the 10-stop OneAsia Tour and again be co-sanctioned by the European Tour, said a new release.

A Gary Player-designed course at the “exclusive” Jinji Lake International Golf Club course, some 60 miles from Shanghai, will host the event for the first time on April 15-18.

Swedish carmakers Volvo, who have backed the tournament since its inception in 1995, have boosted the prize pot by $300,000 and taken over promotion from their local partners.

The China Golf Association (CGA) announced their controversial split from the Asian Tour at the launch of the China Open last year, throwing their lot in with the fledgling rival OneAsia Tour. Australian Scott Strange won the 2009 China Open in Beijing by one stroke.
