Casey’s rough justice plea after seven at ‘Road’ hole

ST ANDREWS, Scotland, July 16 (Reuters) - Paul Casey pleaded for some relief from the knee-high rough at the 17th after coming unstuck with a triple-bogey at the fiendishly difficult ‘Road’ hole in the British Open second round on Friday.

The world number 10 made a thrilling start with five birdies in eight holes including a hat-trick from the first, but his runaway train of a round came to an unexpected halt at the penultimate hole.

Briton Casey found all sorts of trouble after pulling his drive into the gorse. He needed two attempts to hack out sideways before his fourth stroke drifted well wide and he took three to get down from the left of the green.

“That’s the thickest rough on the golf course,” he told reporters after a second 69 left him on six-under 138. “I would just like it thinned out.

“For the majority of the time if you go down the right you get the better angle and if you go down the left it’s that much more difficult.”

Casey, though, acknowledged his drive left a lot to be desired.

“It wasn’t a great tee shot. It’s difficult to hug that right side today with the wind, pretty intimidating, and when I got down there I was just trying to go sideways.

“There was no way of going forward. I wanted to go straight sideways but couldn’t go at it too hard because if I went at it too hard and it came out I could end up in Room 312 (of the Old Course Hotel).”

After penning a disappointing seven on his card, Casey took out his frustration on his tee shot at the driveable 18th and finished pin-high left, 60 feet from the hole, to set up a closing birdie.

“There was a little bit of anger there,” he laughed. “To be honest I’m not even that frustrated with what happened on 17.

“If you had told me I’d be in the clubhouse on six under I would have bitten your arm off, especially the conditions as we were warming up this morning in the wind and the pouring rain.

“Yeah, I’m very happy with that,” added Casey.
