Paul Azinger's four wild cards for the Ryder Cup will be named only two weeks before the sides gather at Valhalla in September.
Previous American teams have had only two captain's picks and have been
known more than a month ahead of the match, but Azinger asked for more
wild cards and more time to decide who he wanted.
According to the PGA, Azinger's selections will be known on September
2, two days after Nick Faldo completes the European lineup with two
wild cards and 17 days before the match gets under way in Kentucky.
Azinger will therefore be able to judge form for three weeks longer than was the case for Tom Lehman two years ago.
The race for the eight automatic spots in his side will once more
conclude at the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills from August 7-10.
The last qualifying event for Europe is the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles from August 28-31.
